The critical period for weed control has been defined as an interval in the life cycle of the crop when it must be kept weed-free to prevent yield loss. In corn, the critical period extends from 3-8-leaf stage. Excellent weed control must be maintained throughout this critical period. Over several years, field research conducted by Dr. Clarence Swanton in Ontario concluded that corn kept weed-free for approximately 34 days after planting or until the 6-8-leaf stage had a yield loss of 0-5% under conditions of heavy weed pressure.
Enter a corn yield amount in bushels per acre for your field that you feel represents a yield without the competition from weeds. A good starting point is your highest corn yield for that field and then adjust the yield slightly if you feel weeds negatively affected the yield that year.
